Eight readiness actions

Prepare, practice, confirm

  1. Identify every animal.Prepare species-appropriate identification, current photos, ownership records, care instructions, medication details, and a backup copy.
  2. Plan two ways out.Document more than one safe exit route. Know vehicle, trailer, gate, bridge, and turning constraints before conditions deteriorate.
  3. Leave before movement becomes dangerous.Animals, large vehicles, and inexperienced loaders need more time. Define an early-departure trigger with official alert levels in mind.
  4. Practice loading.Use the actual animals, people, containment equipment, and transport setup during calm conditions. Never learn during a fire.
  5. Confirm primary and backup destinations.Check species compatibility, containment, water, feed, care responsibility, arrival process, and current capacity. A directory entry is not a reservation.
  6. Stage supplies safely.Prepare halters, leads, carriers, portable panels, food, water, medicines, records, first-aid items, lighting, protective equipment, and safe communications.
  7. Choose an out-of-region contact.Agree on how your household will report departure, destination, animal status, and reunification if local communications are unreliable.
  8. Review every season.Recheck animal counts, capacity, equipment condition, provider availability, permissions, consent, verification, credential expiry, and official guidance.
